Major Marty Deckard, a Field Artillery officer, deployed to Iraq in February 2007 and redeployed in February 2008 as a border transition team (BTT) chief. Upon being notified of his deployment while instructing at the Captain's Career Course, Deckard began training at Fort Riley, Kansas, in November 2006. He felt that the training with the team's various weapons systems was the most valuable aspect of the training. His team received additional training in Kuwait and Iraq but none of it addressed the border police mission. As a result, he said, his team had "no idea how the border patrol, the border police were organized." The former commander of 1st Battalion, 24th Infantry Regiment during its transformation to a Stryker unit, Colonel Emmett Schaill deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from September 2004 through June 2005 as the deputy commanding officer (DCO) for 1st Brigade, 25th Infantry Division - the Stryker Brigade - based in Mosul, Iraq. From January 2004 through January 2005 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, Major Darren Keahtigh served as commander of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry - part of 2nd Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division - and was based variously in Baghdad and Fallujah. In this two-part interview, he discusses his company's operations based out of Camp Victory and work in the Khadamiyah District of the Iraqi capital. Among his initial challenges was taking over an area of operations with his one company that had previously been controlled by two companies. From September 2005 to August 2006, Major Walter Roberson served as executive officer of a military transition team (MiTT) assigned to 3rd Battalion, 3rd Brigade of the 1st Iraqi Army Division - at the time a tier-one unit that was operating on its own and had its own battlespace in the vicinity of Habbaniyah. Part of a MiTT that included a mix of soldiers from the Army Reserve and National Guard, as well as, later, some active duty Marines, Roberson - formerly of the 6th Ranger Training Battalion - realized early on that he "couldn't treat them like I'd treat my Rangers back at home station." Accordingly, he talks at length about his own team dynamics, the internal and external challenges he faced as the XO, and most importantly the impact that taking comparatively heavy casualties had on the MiTT. MAJ Scott Vervisch served on a military transition team (MiTT) in Taji, Salman Pak and Sadr City, Iraq during 2005 and 2006 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). In this February 2009 interview, MAJ Vervisch discusses the MiTT training at Fort Riley, Kansas, how his unit decided on how best to assist the Iraqi Army battalion they were attached to, and the rewards of working with very aggressive, very receptive Iraqis. Major Johnny Austin, British Army, deployed to Iraq in the spring of 2003 as the mortar officer and a platoon commander with 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment of Fusiliers as part of an armored battle group. His parent unit was the 7 Armoured Brigade stationed in Germany. Different battle groups drawn from regiments across the British Army comprised the task force that supported Operation Iraqi Freedom, including the Black Watch and Royal Scots Dragoons Guards. Predeployment training included collective training, gunnery and physical training, as well as nuclear, biological and chemical decontamination training. Relationships between habitat selection and population vital rates of greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; hereafter sage-grouse), recently designated as a candidate species under the Endangered Species Act, within the Great Basin are not well-understood. The growing development of renewable energy infrastructure within areas inhabited by sage-grouse is thought to influence predator and vegetation communities. For example, common ravens (Corvus corax), a synanthropic sage-grouse nest predator, are increasing range-wide and select transmission lines and other tall structures for nesting and perching. In the Virginia Mountains of northwestern Nevada, we collected preliminary information of space-use, habitat selection, and population vital rates during the nesting and brood-rearing period over two years on 56 sage-grouse. Major Larry Burris commanded Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Infantry Division during the opening days of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Commanding for 22 months, Burris deployed his company to Kuwait attached to 1st Battalion, 64thArmor for an Operation Desert Spring rotation in September 2002. Charlie Company's call to war came at the end of a valuable training cycle that included a National Training Center rotation and gunnery. Valuable, multi-echelon training continued in Kuwait as Burris' company drew pre-positioned equipment and put it to good use, including live-fires and proctored training under the tutelage of MPRI observer-controllers in situational training exercises. In this May 2009 interview MAJ Joshua Ruisanchez, Aviation, discusses his deployment to Iraq as the petroleum, oil, and lubricants/ammunition (Class III/V) platoon leader in the 2-3 Infantry. The commander of 1st Battalion, 6th Field Artillery in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004-2005, Colonel Steven Bullimore, in this interview, begins by explaining how he went about re-training his artillery soldiers to be infantrymen and converting artillery batteries into infantry companies, in preparation for his unit's deployment to the Ba'qubah area of operations. Bullimore says that cultural awareness, however, was just as important as mastering traditional tactical skills. In this February 2009 interview MAJ David DeFelice discusses in detail his deployment to Kuwait and Iraq in preparation for the initial invasion into Iraq. MAJ DeFelice describes the pre-deployment training he and his unit received while in Kuwait and the dividends that paid for the Soldiers as time wore on and they eventually crossed the berm into Iraq.
